06 Mar Impact Pediatric Health Pitch Competition Preview for SXSW
We are quickly approaching the inaugural Impact Pediatric Pitch Competition on March 16, 2015 at SXSW in Austin, TX.
This event was created to connect pediatric hospitals with innovative startups solving their most pressing needs including gamification, mental health, patient safety, population management, prematurity, and remote monitoring. For these startups to succeed, they need access to investors and customers. So, we decided to bring all of these groups together and the event is shaping up to truly be a gamechanger.
Here’s why we’re excited about the competition… Many healthcare innovators focus on the opportunity that exists for better serving an aging population. Although frequently overlooked, market dynamics and trends make the pediatric healthcare sector exciting as well:
- Approximately 25% of the US population receives pediatric care
- Spending on pediatric healthcare has increased almost 12% since 2007
- Total market size is estimated at $186 billion.
Here is what you’ll see at SXSW!

Pitches
The finalists selected to pitch at Impact Pediatric Health are a strong and promising group of companies that address some of the most pressing needs in the pediatric space. Here is a quick teaser about each presenting startup (click on the company name for a full profile):
- Bloom Technologies uses medical-grade technology in the form of a wearable to provide women with new insight into their health and their body during pregnancy. Bloom also empowers them with the opportunity to share their data and crowd source aggregation of the most comprehensive dataset on prenatal health ever collected.
- CareAline Products, LLC creates innovate functional, line and risk management wraps and sleeves and a smart wrap for Central Lines and PICC Lines. These products keep lines off of patients’ skin, which drastically reduces line damage and accidental line removal and the need for emergency repairs and surgeries while eliminating the need for additional tape to secure the lines.
- Care Monster has created an app available for Android and iOS devices that helps family members and friends coordinate caregiving and visiting schedules, activities and milestones in the care of a loved one. This coordination ensures that a patient does not have visitors on one day and none for the rest of the week.
- FlowBrush Inc. is a medical device company that provides a daily lung function monitoring service to families and third-party payers of children with moderate to severe, persistent asthma.
- Lully makes smart products with hardware and software that will help children and parents sleep through the night with peace of mind. Products slip under the mattress and use a proprietary, safe, soothing vibration-based technology to ensure that the child is in the best and safest stage of sleep for the entire night.
- Medical Informatics Corp. provides clinicians access to actionable information that can improve patient care, improve outcomes, and reduce costs. Their software product, Sickbay™, is like GPS for doctors; it tracks the trajectory of the patient’s health status in real-time, calculates different risk factors according to the specific condition of the patient, and forecasts when things are about to go wrong.
- NarrativeDx provides a patient experience management platform that collects and analyzes data that are both internal and external to healthcare settings. NarrativeDx uses natural language processing (NLP) to identify patterns out of unstructured patient feedback that would otherwise be lost in the noise and uses these patterns to present actionable insights to healthcare providers so they can take targeted actions to improve care and maximize reimbursements.
- NuvoGroup is a medical device company that provides affordable, wearable, consumer-oriented products for the continuous, safe and accurate monitoring of multiple vital pregnancy data. Nuvo’s products are fully passive, portable, non-invasive and safe wearable solutions do not require the physical searching of signals. Besides providing peace-of-mind to expectant mothers, Nuvo’s platform will provide complete maternity care, such as early detection of symptoms that may cause severe complications for both mother and child. Such early detection and intervention can reduce health care costs and improve maternal and fetal well-being.
- Owlet Baby Care has developed a wearable health monitor for infants called the Owlet Smart Sock. This baby sock collects important information like heart rate, oxygen levels, skin temperature and movement, which can be sent via wifi right to mom and dad’s smart phone.
- SonoMotion Inc. is developing non-invasive solutions for the treatment of kidney stones that will be safer, more effective and more cost effective than existing options. SonoMotion’s first product non-invasively images, moves and clears stone from the kidney using a standard diagnostic ultrasound probe before surgery is required or post-lithotripsy to clear stone fragments. SonoMotion’s second product will break large stones non-invasively using the stone’s natural resonance leading to a faster, safer and more effective approach than exiting methods.

The Passion
We have been honored to involve people all of whom are passionate about innovation in pediatric healthcare but have different talents and ways of expressing their interest in this space. Most notably, Regina Holliday and Lisa Regan have contributed their respective artistic talents to the event. Organizations that are leading the charge on healthcare innovations like TEDMED, Health 2.0, and MIT Hacking Medicine have also significantly contributed to making this event a success.
